One person was hospitalized after a house fire in East Rockaway Saturday afternoon, according to Nassau County police.
East Rockaway and several other fire departments responded to the scene on Baisley Avenue shortly before 1:30 p.m., a police department spokesman said Saturday.
Firefighters battled heavy fire on the second floor of the two-story house, which took nearly an hour to bring under control.
Police assisted at the scene and one person was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for burns, officials said.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
As of Friday morning, Nassau had responded to 17 active fire calls in a one-week span, Nassau Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro told Newsday. Officials in Suffolk County previously told Newsday that there were eight fires in the county from Feb. 6 through Feb. 12.
Fire officials noted an uptick in active calls amid what Uttaro called "the heating season" — the period from November through midspring that is "notorious for fires," Newsday reported.
