Metropolitan Transportation Authority: Person hit, killed by train in Freeport

An LIRR train entering the Freeport station Wednesday afternoon struck and killed a pedestrian who trespassed on the Babylon branch tracks, the MTA police said in a statement.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by Northwell Health EMS, said officials with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Transit police did not identify the deceased person, but said they reviewed video footage and spoke to witnesses as part of their investigation. No criminality was suspected.
Train 257, traveling toward the city and carrying 200 passengers, hit the pedestrian at 3:53 p.m. near the Freeport Long Island Rail Road station, officials said.
No one on board was injured, according to the MTA police. The Freeport police and fire departments assisted with the response to the crash.
Passengers were helped off the train after the collision and continued on their way after the tracks were cleared.
The fatality caused some cancellations and delays of 15 to 30 minutes both ways on the Babylon branch. The line was on or close to schedule later Wednesday.
MTA police are still investigating, and the release of the person’s identity is pending.
