Newsday Wrestler of the Year: Gabrielle Severin, Bethpage, 120, Sr., 42-2

After missing most of her junior season with an elbow injury, Severin made up for lost time in her final ride. Severin trailed Gigi Sullivan (Monroe-Woodbury) by a point but scored a takedown with 7 seconds left to claim the 120-pound state title with a 6-4 decision. She was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Two days before the state tournament, Severin announced her commitment to Oklahoma State University. The two-time state finalist was named the Nassau tournament’s Champion of Champions after winning her second straight county crown. She was the runner-up at 120 pounds at the Eastern States Classic. Both of her losses came to out-of-state opponents.

Suffolk Wrestler of the Year: Aaliyah Morrow, Bellport, 152, Sr., 24-2

Morrow made her run through the state tournament look easy. After picking up three technical falls in 2:03, she won an 8-0 decision over Ja’Niyah Simmons of Canandaigua for the 152-pound title. She was pinned in last year’s state final.

“The whole day, I was just thinking to be smart and get to my turns on top,” Morrow said. “I’m really glad that I got to show everyone what I was capable of.”

Morrow picked up a pin and two technical falls on her way her second straight Suffolk title.

FIRST TEAM

Reese Adams, Calhoun, 126, Sr., 25-4

Adams returned from a torn ACL that forced her to miss her junior season. She won her first Nassau title and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Adams was the state runner-up, losing to Minisink Valley’s Sara Pauls.

Olivia Anello, Patchogue-Medford, 100, Soph., 25-5

Anello pinned Cadence Guy (Walton-Delaware Academy) in 5:59 to take third at the state tournament. Anello, who wrestles for Bellport, won her second straight Suffolk title. She is a two-time state placewinner.

Haley Gonzales, Hicksville, 132, Sr., 19-0

Gonzales was dominant once again. The Felician University commit won a 10-0 technical fall over Carmen Bishop (Groton) in 1:46 for her second straight state title. She picked up two pins and two technical falls on her way to her second straight Nassau crown.

Naomi Gonzalez, Valley Stream North, 235, Sr., 17-1

Gonzalez flipped the script after being taken down early, securing a pin over defending state champion Peyton Mullin (Dundee) in the state final. She had the most pins in the least time at the state tournament with four in 3:39. She pinned her way to her second straight Nassau title.

Caitlin Maragioglio, Bellport, 132, Jr., 26-4

She won a 10-0 technical fall over Alexa Doxey (Niagara Wheatfield) for third at the state tournament. The two-time state placewinner won her first Suffolk title and was a Fargo All-American in July.

Katie Porcelli, Rocky Point, 107, Jr., 21-7

Porcelli was the state runner-up, losing to Lehigh commit Charlie Wylie (Port Jervis). The two-time state placewinner was the Suffolk runner-up.

Mia Severino, Lindenhurst, 114, Fr., 26-7

Severino won a 4-0 decision over Gionna Fulton (Hilton) for third at the state tournament. She is a two-time state placewinner. She pinned her way to a second straight Suffolk title.

Keishara Tulloch, Uniondale, 152, Jr., 36-3

Tulloch won an 8-3 decision over Gabriella Gonzales (Phoenix) to place fifth in the state tournament. The two-time state place winner won her second straight Nassau title and helped Uniondale to the inaugural Nassau dual meet title.

Coach of the Year: Tim Godoy, Uniondale

Godoy led Uniondale to the inaugural Nassau dual meet title with a 34-30 win over Long Beach. Uniondale won the team title at the Nassau individual championships for the second straight year with 288 points.
