The weather was getting worse. The wind and rain picked up at Farmingdale High School. The momentum had shifted toward Long Beach.
The Dalers trailed by six after several big plays from the Marines. But despite the conditions, Farmingdale junior quarterback Nick Toto launched a deep pass that soared through the wind to Patrick Videau for a 37-yard touchdown. After Ryan LaRacco's PAT, Farmingdale took a one-point lead with just under nine and a half minutes remaining in the game.
The clock kept ticking as the rain kept pouring. This time, the Dalers never gave the momentum back. Farmingdale held on to defeat Long Beach, 20-19, in a Nassau I/II crossover game Friday night.
“We’ve been working on that play all week,” Toto said. “It didn’t connect the first play of the game. I knew we were going to come back. I knew he was going to clutch up. He made an incredible catch.”
After trailing 13-7 at halftime, Long Beach scored 12 unanswered points. Brody Riedel had a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Four plays later, Jonathan Hayes had a 34-yard pick-6, and Long Beach led 19-13 with 3:46 left in the third quarter.
“I just had to keep everyone up, have the next-play mentality,” Tot said. “We continue to play Farmingdale football, and we don’t listen to the outside noise.”
Toto connected with fellow junior Jack Watrous for two touchdowns of 32 and 25 yards in the first half. Toto finished with 101 passing yards and three scores. He added 70 rushing yards.
Toto’s tying touchdown pass came two drives after he threw a pick-6. After previously missing an extra point, LaRacco nailed the go-ahead PAT in the wind for the game's final point.
Long Beach then got the ball with 9:25 remaining at its own 35-yard line. Brody Juan connected with Joe Henn for a 21-yard gain, and Juan made several more plays with his legs. Eventually, the Marines faced fourth-and-10 at the Farmingdale 31-yard line. A pass into the end zone was incomplete with Tyce McLune in coverage with 5:45 left.
Long Beach got the ball back with 2:06 remaining, but a botched snap allowed Shayne McCarthy to recover it for the Dalers with 2:02 left in the game.
Farmingdale ran the clock down to 15 seconds, when Long Beach had a final shot from its own 20-yard line.
The horn sounded as the final pass was thrown, and Jake Albignano came down with an interception. The rain came down the hardest it had all night, and the celebration was in full swing.
“This is what high school football’s supposed to be,” Farmingdale coach Buddy Krumenacker said. “Something like this tonight. All the things that went wrong and the things that went right, and then it rains. It’s the whole megillah tonight.”
