Jaguar Land Rover plans to cut about 4,000 jobs globally over the next two years, the company confirmed.

The job cuts are an effort to save $2.3 billion in a competitive market moving toward electric cars, according to a company statement by CEO PB Balaji.

"The automotive industry faces significant challenges, with technological change amidst intense competition and ongoing geo-political uncertainty," the statement reads. "Through our Growth Reimagined strategy, JLR is moving decisively to strengthen our competitiveness and position the business for long-term success."

There are Jaguar Land Rover dealerships in Huntington, Glen Cove, Southampton and Freeport. Jaguar Land Rover corporate declined to comment on whether the plan would affect any Long Island jobs.

In the statement, Balaji said the company is "reducing organisational complexity," while also planning to release five new products over the next year.

"These actions will support continued investment of £15-18 billion over the next five years in electrification, digital technologies, advanced manufacturing and enhanced customer experiences," Balaji said.

The Associated Press identified Jaguar Land Rover, the maker of luxury SUVs like the Range Rover and Discovery, as "Britain's biggest automaker." The company is owned by India-based Tata Motors, which the AP reported produces most of its vehicles in the United Kingdom. According to the AP, most of the job cuts are expected to affect U.K. operations, which employ about 34,000 people.
